The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies held its Annual Gala Dinner on May 1, 2012 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Washington, DC. The Joint Center presented its highest honor, the Louis E. Martin Great American Award, to Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed. Mayor Reed joined the ranks of past honorees including former Presidents Jimmy Carter and William Jefferson Clinton; Congressmen James E. Clyburn (D-SC), Charles B. Rangel (D-NY), and John Lewis (D-GA); Muhammad Ali; lawyer and civil rights leader Vernon E. Jordan, Sr.; the late civil rights activist Dorothy I. Height; and the Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.
