The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies Health Policy Institute held its 2012 PLACE MATTERS National Conference on September 4 and 5, 2012, at the Renaissance Hotel in Washington, DC. The Joint Center's PLACE MATTERS initiative, begun in 2006, seeks to build the capacity of local leaders to identify and address social determinants of health in their communities, particularly the relationship between place and health. This year's conference examined health inequities in minority and low-income communities and explored initiatives that are working to promote health equality. Speakers and honorees in attendance included Angela Glover Blackwell of PolicyLink, Dr. Howard Frumkin of the University of Washington School of Public Health, Geoffrey Canada of the Harlem Children's Zone, and Kathy Lim Ko of the Asian and Pacific Islander American Health Forum.
