Please join the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies for a special Men’s Health Month roundtable: Where are We Now: Assessing National Progress Toward Improving the Health of Men of Color, a discussion on the nation’s progress toward meeting national objectives on the health and wellbeing of men of color.
Throughout the world, men of color typically have shorter life spans than women, have higher incidences of preventable disease and disability, and are often more exposed to health risk associated with violence, smoking, alcohol abuse and obesity. In addition, men tend not to be involved in public initiatives related to reproductive health, nor do they play a significant role in family planning or pregnancy, and are less likely to have health insurance, a regular doctor, or utilize preventive health services.
This Joint Center roundtable discussion will highlight best practice recommendations for reversing these trends and update current progress of national health objectives for promoting health and preventing disease among men of color. With participants assessing the nation’s progress meeting Healthy People 2020 objectives pertaining to men of color, this event is intended to serve as a catalyst for the development of a framework towards a national consensus on the health of men of color.
Participants will include:
- David Bell, M.D., M.P.H., Assistant Clinical Professor of Population and Family Health, Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics, College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia Mailman School of Public Health
- Allen Herman, M.D., Ph.D., Senior Staff Associate, Econometrica, Inc. and Co-Chair, Joint Center Commission on Paternal Involvement in Pregnancy Outcomes
