Joint Center HPI

The Health Policy Institute (HPI) is a principle program of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies. The HPI was operationally launched in 2002 with a grant from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation. The Foundations' purpose was to enable the Joint Center to build a health policy institute that would facilitate the participation of "neglected" or "unheard" voices in health policy debates and that would improve the health of underserved and diverse people by supporting national partners in efforts to help communities inform policy and sharing promising practices.

In this era of escalating health care costs, expanding national deficits and state budget constraints, the issue of health disparities is a major political and economic concern. Resolving health disparities would do more to reduce expenditures and save lives than improving the “technology” of health care. Yet long-standing disparities in disease and death rates experienced by racial and ethnic minorities seem intractable. New policy solutions and commitments are urgently needed. The purpose of HPI is to identify and promote effective solutions to the problem of health disparities.

HPI engages in many activities, including: research and information dissemination; policy workshops, forums, and conferences; technical assistance for community-based organizations; media relations; and outreach to minority leaders and their organizations. A network of advisors and fellows enables the Institute to accomplish its mission without a large resident staff.

The Joint Center Health Policy Institute is based in Washington, DC, where it can inform members of Congress and national organizations on issues of concern. HPI also reaches out to a broad spectrum of audiences by leveraging our long-standing relationships with a national constituency of elected and appointed public officials, community leaders and policy makers.
