Place Matters for Health

A Congressional Briefing

Organized by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies

Please join us on Monday, June 13, 2011, for a Congressional briefing on "Place Matters for Health," to be held in room B369 of the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, D.C.  The briefing is sponsored by the Health Policy Institute (HPI) of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, in collaboration with the Congressional Rural Caucus, the Congressional Black Caucus, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus.  Lunch will be provided.

What: A briefing on "Place Matters for Health".  The briefing will a) explore how communities shape health outcomes, b) share research findings from work in several communities, and c) examine how policy strategies and community-oriented solutions can lead to significant gains in health outcomes.

Who: Featured panelists include:

  • Ralph B. Everett, President and CEO of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies
  • The Honorable Donna M. Christensen (D-VI), Chair, Congressional Black Caucus Health Braintrust
  • Brian Smedley, Ph.D., Vice President and Director, Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies Health Policy Institute
  • Bruce Behringer, Executive Director of the Office of rural and Community Health and Community Partnerships at East Tennessee State University
  • Paul Lopez, a member of the City Council in Denver, CO.

When: Monday, June 13, 2011 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Where: Rayburn House Office Building, Room B369

Why:  A growing body of research demonstrates that where we live, work, worship, study, and play have a significant influence on our health.  In particular, communities characterized by high levels of poverty-whether in urban or rural settings-present a number of barriers to the opportunity for good health.

The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies is one of the nation's leading research and public policy institutions and the only one whose work focuses primarily on issues of particular concern to African Americans and other people of color.  To learn more, please visit www.jointcenter.org.
