American Public Health Association Annual Conference

October 31 - November 2, 2011
The American Public Health Association 2011 Annual Conference was held in Washington, DC from October 31st to November 2nd. With hundreds of sessions, the conference was attended by over 10,000 people. Several PLACE MATTERS team members were able to present, along with Dr. Brian Smedley, on their upcoming Community Health Equity Reports. The reports explore differences in health outcomes among populations living in the same cities. Teams were represented by Michael Scott of Baltimore, Kitty Richards of Bernalillo County, and John Capitman of San Joaquin Valley. To view their presentations, click here.

Jefferson County Team Holds Food Day Event
On October 24, 2011, the Jefferson County PLACE MATTERS Team partnered with UAB HealthSmart celebrated National Food Day in downton Birmingham, AL. The all-day event was intended to "promote the importance of a safe and healthy diet to reduce obesity and diet-rlated diseases". In an effort to do this, the event provided free bags of fruits and vegetables, in addition to free ingredients and recipes for "meatless mondays". Webinar: PLACE MATTERS 2012 Program Plans
On November 7, 2011, the Joint Center Health Policy Instutute hosted a webinar to discuss the future plans on PLACE MATTERS for the upcoming year. The webinar was presented by Dr. Brian Smedley, along with Felicia Eaves and Mark Cervero and focused on benchmarks for PLACE MATTERS Teams, upcoming Action Labs and Technical Assistance. Dr. Brian Smedley to Speak at University of New Mexico Center for Health Policy
Dr. Brian Smedley will speak at the University of New Mexico on December 1, 2011. The event, which is in partnership with the Bernalillo County PLACE MATTERS Team, is part of the Center for Health Policy's Fall 2011 Lecture series. The topic of the lecture is "Moving from Science to Policy and Practice: Building Healthier Communities Based on Human Rights". ACTION LABS: Moving From Awareness to Engagement and Mobilization
The PLACE MATTERS initiative will celebrate its sixth year in January 2012! The new year will represent new ideas, strategies and approaches to moving our collective work forward. The first ACTION Lab of the year will be hosted by the San Jaoquin Valley Team in Fresno, CA on February 29-March 2. ACTION Labs are aimed to reflect where the teams are at this phase of their equity work.

A Call For Upstream Action Through Community Collaboration to Reduce Infant Mortality in Detroit

In collaboration with the Wayne County Department of Public Health and the Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion, the Wayne County PLACE MATTERS Team has released a report entitiled "Already Broken: A Call for Upstream Action Through Community Collaboration to Reduce Infant Mortality in Detroit. This thought provoking paper takes a new look at addressing the problems of infant mortatlity as it exists in Detroit, MI. To download a copy of the report, click here.

Social Media Refresher
How to Best Use Your Web Presence!
If your feeling rusty in Social Media, please review the PLACE MATTERS Webinar #5: Using Social Media to Promote a Health Equity Movement. Facebook is a great tool to promote your team's events and initiatives. Follow the lead of the Alameda County team and create a page for your team. Twitter is a promising tool as well - be sure to follow the newly create PLACE MATTERS twitter account.
For those teams that are more ambitious, you may want to create your own website. See the Bernalillo County and Baltimore City teams' websites here and here.
