Health Equity and Reform: What's Next?
Thursday, December 17, 2009
2:00-3:00 Eastern Time
Community Catalyst is hosting a conference call to discuss measures to reduce racial and ethnic health disparities in the national health reform bills and to identify post reform opportunities to advance health equity. Michael Miller, Community Catalyst's strategic policy director, will update callers on what's in the bills, what's missing, and what you can do. Michael Curry, a leader in the Massachusetts Disparities Action Network, will discuss post-reform activities, drawing on work to reduce disparities since Massachusetts passed its own health reform law in 2006.
There are currently several provisions in the House and Senate health reform bills that could help reduce disparities, including training for health professionals in cultural and linguistic competence, expanded wellness and prevention programs, requirements for data collection by race and ethnicity, and coverage for legal immigrants. While these provisions may move the nation toward health equity, many people will still be without coverage and health care. Continued work in the states will be vital to advance health equity. This call will help state advocates integrate the reduction of disparities into their agenda on an ongoing basis. There will also be time for your questions and suggestions.
