womensenews.org March 25, 2011

Today is the one year anniversary of the passage of the Affordable Care Act and guess what? According to a recent survey, over one half of Americans don't think health reform is actually a law.

It is folks.

I'm marking the one year anniversary by attending the National Association of Black Journalists Media Institute on Health, Health Policy and Health Disparities in Washington, DC.

Health Reform's Next Act: A Focus On Achieving Health Equity

Kaiser Health News March 18, 2011

By Brian D. Smedley, Ph.D.

When President Barack Obama met with the nation's governors last month and offered to allow states to establish their own plans to reform health care in place of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, he insisted that states meet or exceed the same goals established in the health overhaul to expand insurance coverage, improve the quality of care and contain rapidly escalating healthcare costs.

Health Behavior News Service Februar 24, 2011

In 2000, a black, working-aged resident of a poor neighborhood was significantly more likely to die than a white American - a situation that essentially remained unchanged from 20 years earlier, according to a study in the April issue of the American Journal of Public Health.

Repeal would dash hopes to reduce disparities

January 18, 2011 The Baltimore Sun

By Brian D. Smedley and John E. McDonough

The U.S. House of Representatives plans to vote soon to repeal the health care reform law that was enacted last year. While that effort is unlikely to go any further for the time being, it is important to consider what repeal would mean for the largest-growing segment of the population, people of color, and for a nation that has struggled to address the mounting costs of its health care system.
