Health Workforce Demographics, last updated March 10, 2009
Despite modest gains in minority enrollment into health professions schools, Blacks/African Americans, American Indians/Alaskan Natives, Hispanics/Latino, and some Asian American and Pacific Islander communities are vastly under-represented in all health professions, especially those requiring a terminal degree, and in junior and senior level academic appointments. While school data is relatively accurate and frequently updated, data on practicing health providers is outdated, difficult to ascertain, discrepant and largely under-reported. Keeping accurate data on the racial and ethnic demographics of the health workforce is crucial in monitoring national trends and efficacy of interventions.
