Webinar #1: Engaging Your Elected Officials in the Fair Health Movement

Wednesday, April 15, 2009 || 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm

One of the key lessons learned from the Place Matters Initiative is the significant impact public policy has on the health and well being of communities. The ultimate goal of this work is to alter the social determinants of health in these communities, factors which are directly influenced by public policy. Therefore, it is critical that teams establish productive relationships with local and state elected officials as part of their mission to reduce health disparities and promote health equity within their communities.

The goal of this Place Matters Webinar is to review and discuss strategies that Place Matters team members may implement in order to connect with their elected officials, and actively engage them in the fair health movement. The Place Matters Elected Officials Outreach Information Kit and Checklist will be reviewed in preparation for the Hill visits scheduled for Design Lab #10. In addition, the perspectives and experiences of both a current state representative and former local elected official will be shared to give attendees an understanding of how public will impacts policymaking.
