2000 ANNUAL REPORT

The 2000 Annual Report of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies summarizes the major activities of the Joint Center for the calendar year. The report analyzes the platforms of the presidential candidates and assesses the effect of the platforms on African Americans. It describes the Joint Center’s participation in the Eighth National Policy Alliance and focuses on its efforts to advance minorities through the Minority Business Roundtable and to shine a light on the study of HIV/AIDS. The report identifies the Joint Center's Board of Governors and staff, lists its publications and events for 2000, names its contributors and presents its financial statement.

Q & A: Better Health Through Stronger Communities: An Interview with Dr. Gail C. Christopher

Th e Dellums Commission, chaired by former Congressman and Mayorelect Ronald Dellums, was formed by the Health Policy Institute (HPI) of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies to analyze policies that affect the physical, emotional, and social health of young men of color and their communities and to develop an action plan to alter those public policies that limit life paths for these youth. In this interview with Focus, Dr. Gail C. Christopher, Joint Center vice president for health, women and families and director of HPI, discusses the Commission’s work and plans for using momentum created by the Commission to achieve policy reform.

A Shout Out from Our Youth to Our Nation's Leaders

This report was prepared by the Joint Center Health Policy Institute Youth Task Force on the Sexual and Reproductive Health of Young Men of Color. It contains recommendations based both on information gathered at three forums convened by the Task Force for young people of color and on the diverse backgrounds and experiences of the eight Task Force members.

Did You Know?

In 2005, African American children were disproportionately likely to receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits. African American children were 21 percent of the 1.64 million children who received SSDI benefits as the children of disabled workers, but were only 15.5 percent of all children in the United States.
