DataBank, Roster of Black Elected Officials, and National Opinion Polls

The Joint Center's DataBank is a comprehensive warehouse of data on racial populations. It includes, among other things, comparative data on education, economic empowerment, health, housing, and demographic information, as well as fact sheets on selected topics.

The Roster of Black Elected Officials is updated on a regular basis and provides the most complete compilation of black elected officials at all levels of government.

Since 1984, the Joint Center has conducted over 20 National Opinion Polls. The primary focus of a majority of the surveys has been the political attitudes of African Americans and members of the general population. Other polls the Joint Center has conducted have examined issues including: black philanthropy, attitudes toward other countries, the black family, welfare reform and devolution, health policy, regulatory reform and the declining propensity to serve in the military, among others.

Did You Know?

Did you know that the earliest age at which you can retire and receive partial Social Security benefits is 62 years? Did you know that the earliest age at which you can retire with full benefits is 65 years? Many African Americans do not know these facts—a October-November 2005 Joint Center survey found that a majority of African American respondents (61 percent) know that you can get benefits if you retire early. However, only 39 percent of African American respondents know that the early retirement age is 62 years, and only a third (32 percent) know that 65 years is the earliest age at which one can retire with full benefits.
