The RNAR Conference Report
The Research Network for Africa's Regeneration was officially launched at a regional conference it co-presented with the Joint Center from May 9 to 11, 2001 in South Africa. It has been one of the highlights of the Joint Center's work in strengthening civil society institutions and promoting policy research in South Africa. The conference theme was Development and Transformation at the Crossroads in South Africa: Challenges of the 21st Century. Although the conference primarily attracted researchers from South African academic institutions, there were also scholars from the region (Botswana, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Zambia), researchers from regional research institutes, non-governmental organizations, community-based organizations, faith-based organizations and government. Presentations covered issues such as Poverty Alleviation, HIV/AIDS, Globalization (and its implications for South Africa and the SADC Region), Youth Empowerment, Gender, the Political Economy of Black Empowerment and Public Participation in Policymaking.
