U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice Receives Joint Center Award

The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies (JCPES) presented its 2013 Louis E. Martin Great American Award to U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice at its annual gala dinner Tuesday evening at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Washington.

Ambassador Rice is only the second woman to receive the award, which is named after the legendary journalist, presidential confident and cofounder of the Joint Center. The late Dr. Dorothy I. Height received the award in 2009.

Each year, the Joint Center presents the award to individuals who are exemplars of change, progress and coalition building across racial lines. Past recipients have included Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, and civil rights leader Vernon E. Jordan. Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed received the award last year.
