Amb. Susan Rice, Congressional Black Caucus Honored at Annual Gala
April 25, 2013

Ambassador Susan E. Rice, the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, will receive the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies’ 2013 Louis E. Martin Great American Award at the organization’s Annual Gala Dinner on May 7 at the Mandarin Oriental in Washington, D.C.

Ambassador Rice, a member of President Obama’s cabinet who has served as the country’s U.N. Representative since early 2009, will be honored for her work in advancing U.S. interests, strengthening the world’s common security and prosperity, and promoting respect for human rights.

A Rhodes Scholar, Ambassador Rice served in President Clinton’s Administration as U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs and, previous to that, on the National Security Council as Senior Director for African Affairs and as Director for International Organizations and Peacekeeping.

“Susan Rice is one of the President’s most trusted advisers and has had enormous influence on American foreign policy over the past two decades,” said Ralph B. Everett, the Joint Center’s President and CEO.  “We are delighted to honor her for her exemplary leadership under the most challenging circumstances, and as someone who has achieved great success in promoting democratic values throughout the world.”

At its Annual Gala Dinner, the Joint Center will also honor the Congressional Black Caucus with its Partnership Award, which recognizes efforts to build strategic relationships within the realm of public policy to expand hope, opportunity and progress in minority and underserved communities across the country.  The two organizations have a longstanding relationship aimed at generating policy solutions for communities of color on a range of critical social and economic issues.

“The Congressional Black Caucus is driving policy innovations and demonstrating a clear commitment to job creation, better health care and a better life in communities of color across our nation,” said Cynthia G. Marshall, Chair of the Joint Center’s Board of Governors.  “Our two organizations are constantly looking to find new ways for the Joint Center to provide research support for the CBC’s agenda, and we are proud to work with them as partners in our common effort to expand hope and opportunity in every community.”
