On Monday, America will commemorate its democratic ideals with two contemporaneous events, the Presidential Inauguration and the observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday. In contrast to the presidential oath of office, essentially unchanged since the time of George Washington, the Dr. King holiday evokes the dynamism of our self-governance, the enormous changes it has wrought and the hope it has inspired in bringing the American Dream within reach of an ever-increasing number of our fellow citizens.
Four years ago, as we tottered on the brink of economic collapse, the inauguration of the country’s first black president was rightly heralded as the beginning of a new chapter for our nation. During his first term, President Obama led the nation forward on the economy, health care, foreign policy and other key challenges. And as he heads into his second term, he has a clear mandate from the voters to accelerate job creation, advance business opportunity, improve public education, make our schools and our streets safer and expand opportunities for our young people to learn, to work hard, to build their careers and to live their dreams.
